Cardiac Device Pre-Implant Education
Below are answers to some of the most common questions we hear from patients who are about to receive a remote patient monitoring cardiac device. If you don’t see the answer to your question, we encourage you to contact us directly at (877) 415 - 4116 x2107.
A pacemaker is a small device that is implanted into your chest. It that helps regulate the heartbeat. It has 2 main parts:
- A small metal container that holds the battery that is placed under the skin.
- An insulated wire that connects the battery to the heart
An ICD is a small device that is implanted into your chest. It will monitor your heart rhythm. If your heart rhythm becomes too fast, the ICD will pace or shock it back into a normal rhythm. The ICD has:
- A small metal container that holds the battery that is placed under the skin.
- A lead that is either under the skin of the chest or placed through a vein into the heart
A loop recorder is a small device that records your heart rate and rhythm.
- It can be set to record when the heart rate is too fast, too slow, or pauses. It is also set so that you can mark symptoms, if needed.
- The information is stored in the device and sent remotely from your home to your doctor each month through a specialized remote device given to you at the time of the procedure.

Your doctor will explain the placement procedure to you.
- Placement is done in the EP/Cardiac Cath Lab. You will be in a deep sleep from anesthesia and will not be able to feel pain during the placement.
- Implantable Loop Recorders can be placed in office under local anesthesia.
- These devices are placed under the skin.
- The doctor will let you know when you can return to full activities and work.
- The doctor will give you special instructions for activities, such as sports, swimming and work.
- If indicated, the doctor or nurse will teach you how you how to use an arm sling
- You will continue to follow-up with your primary cardiologist and/or EP.
- You may also have follow-ups with the Device Clinic
- You will send information from your device to the doctor from home.
- You will receive specific follow-up instructions after the procedure.
- Your home transmitter will do checks every 91 days for pacemakers and implantable cardiac defibrillators or every 31 days for implantable loop recorders.
- A remote transmission sends information from your device from home.
- The box only sends stored information found in the device.
- The information is sent to a computer. Your care team will look at information such as:
- Battery status
- Lead status
- Irregular or fast heart beats
- How much the device is being used
Remote transmissions should not replace clinic visits. Remotes do not let us make the changes you may need to your device. Please keep your scheduled clinic visits.
- There is a charge related to these transmissions. Each insurance company is different. You will need to call your insurance company to find out your cost.
